Johnny Cash is among the most iconic and enduring of all American country music singers, songwriters and performers. He rose to fame during the mid-1950s with his brothers in the popular band The Tennessee Three, making guest appearances on recordings by other artists until signing a contract with Columbia Records in 1955. A combination of Cash’s distinctive, deep tone and compelling narrative songwriting ability brought his songs to new levels of popularity. By the end of the 1950s, Cash was an established star with numerous hits that have become standards and many more that became major hits thanks to the innovations of producer Rick Rubin. John R. Cash became a member of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1987 along with other members of The Highwaymen: June Carter, Merle Kilgore, Bobbie Gentry, Ricky Nelson). Johnny continued to perform extensively until his death from cancer on September 12 2013 at age 71.
